Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that gives people the knowledge and skills to help someone who is developing a mental health challenge or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course is designed to build mental health literacy by helping participants identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness. Like physical first aid, this course is designed to teach the skills needed to provide the initial supportive response to a person experiencing a mental health challenge.
Mental Health First Aid training is designed to provide assistance to a person experiencing a variety of mental health crisis such as a panic attack, overdose or thoughts of suicide. The objective is to help support an individual until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis is resolved. This course covers warning signs for mental health and substance abuse crises. Participants learn to identify and assess risk, develop listening and supportive skills, and identify appropriate professional help.
This course offers participants the opportunity to practice the intervention strategy rather than to just learn about it. This simple experience can make it easier to actually apply the knowledge in a real-life situation.
Instructor: Judy Johnson, LCSW
Cost: $35.00 paid in advance which covers the cost of the course material. Lunch is included.
Pre-registration is required and payment must be received by October 22, 2017.
