Right to Read Celebration

June 8 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Join us for this important Right to Read Celebration presented by the New Republic and hosted by Katie Phang of MSNBC and the daughter of our own Jean Phang. This special event will feature authors who are currently banned or who have been banned in the recent past; fellow writers who have taken up the cause; and teachers, librarians, and students who have been directly impacted by the book bans that are sweeping America (4,240 unique titles were challenged last year, an increase of almost 65% over 2022).

As part of the evening, they will feature book readings and conversations with a group of banned writers including Lauren Groff, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ellen Hopkins, George M. Johnson, Ashley Hope Perez, Jodi Picoult, and Jacqueline Woodson, with more to come.

For the grand finale, they will be recognizing five extraordinary folks—authors, librarians, teachers, activists, and others—who have taken action with a Toni Morrison Courage Award—named after one of the most profound and courageous authors of our time.

As a Sanctuary for Banned Books, we want to show our support for this free event, so please join us. You may register for your free ticket at:

If you wish to take the church shuttle, we will leave the church at 5:45 p.m. Please reserve your seat by registering with Pastor Laurie know at LaurieH@gablesucc.org.
