Beginning in January, the WISE Team will be presenting a yearlong series titled “Grace, Gravity & Getting Old.” This series will be presented by a variety of trained professionals in fields such as medicine, psychiatry, and law, as we begin to explore all aspects of graceful aging. This series will begin on January 19th with a study of Parker Palmer’s book “On the Brink of Everything: Grace, Gravity & Getting Old.” This book is filled with gems of Palmer’s wisdom, as he reflects on his “view from the brink of everything.” The book will be available for sale in December.
Throughout the year, we will have experts share their knowledge on the various aspects of aging, such as exploring the natural aging process, including the physical and psychological changes that occur as we age. There will be a presentation regarding how to deal with the various loses that occur as we get older, such as the loss of certain abilities, the loss of jobs or status, and the loss of those that we love through death. We will also look at what it means to age with dignity. Specifically, we will look at how the Five Wishes process can help us take control of the decisions that need to be made regarding how we would like to be cared for and treated if we become sick or begin having difficulty caring for ourselves.
We hope that you will join us on the Fourth Sunday of each month at 12:30 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge for this exciting series as there will be something for everyone along the spectrum of aging. A light snack will be provided, and childcare is available.
