First Sunday in Advent Worship and Bible Sunday – November 27, 2022

Despite the challenges and vulnerability she faces, Mary, the mother of Jesus, could glimpse the scale and scope of good news she was part of bringing forth. This good news transcends time and space—it was and is bigger than just her. Christ is coming for collective liberation: God’s reception is still at work. Therefore, the promise is meant to be lived out and passed on from generation to generation.

This Advent season, we will reflect on the lives, histories, actions and stories that form the Advent narrative as they are intertwined with our church’s story as we prepare to celebrate our 100th anniversary.

Today is also Bible Sunday! Studying scripture is one of the most important ways we learn about our Christian faith. Each year, Gables UCC presents personal Bibles to every third-grade child as a statement of their growing faith development and as recognition of their being old enough to study scripture on their own. We celebrate the tradition of presenting Bibles to our third graders as a gift from the congregation. It is our prayer that this gift will be a starting point for a deeper relationship with our still-speaking God.
