Some things matter enough for us to stand before kings and rulers and declare with boldness, “Here I stand, I can do no other. God help me, Amen.” So it was with Martin Luther, who nailed his “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517. That act began the Protestant Reformation, sparking not only renewal within the church, but also offering freedom from the demands, rules, and condemnations of church leadership.
The themes of the Reformation remain the great themes and principles of our own faith today. As members and friends of the UCC, a denomination that is a direct descendant of the Reformation movement, we celebrate that at the heart of our faith is the gospel of Jesus Christ—the good news—that makes us free. Join us as we commemorate this historic and meaningful part of our rich church history.
