The message for our morning worship will focus on some of Pastor Laurie’s favorite quotes from Bishop John “Jack” Shelby Spong, who passed away this week.
For those of you who have been with us for a few years now, you will remember that Bishop Spong, at the invitation of Pastor Megan, was with us several times as teacher, scholar, friend, and as our month-long Theologian in Residence, also a vision of Pastor Megan. Each time here, he sparked for many of us a new-found authentic faith, an honest interpretation of scripture, and the excitement of theological discourse and scholarly study.
While he was a radical truth-teller, he also had the heart of a pastor. He believed with everything he was that God’s love knows no bounds and that the church should be open to everyone. He helped entire generations find a home back in the church, often after having felt or been excluded.
